Frequently Asked Questions about 4/4 Viola Bows

What does 4/4 mean on a viola bow?

A 4/4 viola bow is designed for full-size violas. These bows are longer and heavier than children's sizes, offering the right balance and tension for adult players.

What is better: a wooden or a carbon bow for the viola?

A wooden bow (such as pernambuco or Brazilwood) produces a warm, rich tone and is often chosen by advanced and professional players. A carbon bow, on the other hand, is lighter, more stable, and more resistant to temperature and humidity changes – ideal for intensive use or travel.

How do I choose the right bow for my viola?

Pay attention to weight, balance, flexibility, and material. A good bow feels balanced, responds smoothly, and suits your playing style. Try different bows to find the one that best suits your instrument and technique.

How do I maintain a 4/4 viola bow?

Always use high-quality rosin and remove any rosin residue with a soft cloth after playing. Store the stick in a temperature-controlled case and have the rosin replaced regularly by a professional to maintain optimal sound.
